The Social Picture Photographer Spotlight – Tom

London based photographer Tom has worked on several key projects at The Social Picture in 2015, including Britain’s most valuable race meeting, Royal Ascot, Universal Music’s VIP Newcomer event in Berlin and Ed Sheeran’s headline shows at Wembley Stadium. Now it’s time to put Tom under the photographer spotlight ..

1. Can you describe that “moment” (experience, emotion,) when you knew that photography was something you just had to do?

Photography started as a hobby and developed over time, a defining moment was standing on the main stage at a music festival in front thousands of people and getting them to throw their hands in the air for a single photo – just seeing people’s expressions, a jaw dropping sight, a picture is worth a 1000 words.

2. How would you best describe your style of photography?

Spontaneous, shoot first, think later. A million things go through my head in a split second whilst shooting. Lighting, composition, exposure, depth of field, background, trying to predict the subjects movements and capture the photo just at the right time, all these things make up the final image, if I get lost in the photo then my job is complete.

3. Does your approach change depending on what you are working on?

Yes massively, if I’m shooting a wedding it’s all about the bride and emotions, if I’m shooting an underground techno rave its all about the lighting, DJs and attempting to capture the atmosphere. If I’m shooting PR for a company it’s all about the subject and branding. You need to adapt on each project.

4. Is there something you always ask/think to yourself just before you push the button?

Hmmm not really, as I said I shoot first, think later, cameras are so quick I can get the shot composed, focused and done within a split second to capture the moment.

5. What is your post-production workflow like?

Mostly Lightroom/photoshop on mac, it helps to be very organised with drives so that if a client needs images from 6 months ago I can find them straight away.

6. What is your dream project?

I have many, I do quiet a lot of work abroad and I love it. I’d love to do a tropical underwater shoot?

7. What was the best career advice you were ever given?

This game is hard, anyone and everyone is a photographer nowadays, work hard and market yourself well, it’s no good being amazing if no one can see you’re amazing.

8. Is there a single photograph that you are most proud of?

Nope I’m always telling myself I can do better and better, I’m happy if I get 2 or 3 really good shots per shoot.

9. What inspires you to create new work?

I love it when people approach me with exciting new ideas we can work on together, personal projects are very important to keep things fresh and fun.

10. If you could take your art in any direction without fear of failure or rejection, where would it lead? What new thing would you try?

I’m not scared of taking a bad photo, it happens, I’m not worried if someone doesn’t like it, I just do the best I can, and most of the time it works out well. I’ve never been able to stick to one thing, I love to be versatile and perform under any brief, it’s the challenge the buzz of getting them shots I love.
